Agnes Wanjiku(Gender Representative) was concerned that the prevalence of Cancer in Nyeri County has been on a rising trend, with the Ministry of Health reporting that cancer incidence in the year 2020 stood at 2,127 for every 100,000 people . Member underscored the need for the County Government to establish a County Cancer Control Program aimed at reducing cancer incidence rates and cancer mortality through prevention and early detection as well as improve the quality of life of cancer patients through provision of treatment and palliative services among others.In a sitting chaired by the Speaker Hon. James Gichuhi, the House resolved that the CEC in charge of Health Services conducts educational and information campaigns on cancer prevention, treatment and control as prescribed in collaboration with the National Cancer Institute of Kenya and other relevant Public and Private Organizations.The Hon. While moving the motion, Hon. Janet Kamiru (Gender Representative), urged the County Executive Committee Member in charge of Gender to fast track the setting up of an information desk for easier access of disaster-related data. The Legislator emphasized that this will serve as a Liaison Office between the Department and other disaster management partners. In supporting the motion, the Hon. Members noted that disasters may have severe impacts such as loss of lives, injuries, public health threats, property damages and other social, economic and ecological damages and therefore emphasized on the need to have an operational framework providing for disaster management mechanisms and resource mobilization for the same;In a sitting chaired by the Speaker Hon. James Gichuhi, the Hon. Members called upon the CEC in charge of Gender to:-1. Develop Delegated Legislations on disaster preparedness, prevention, response, recovery and disaster management administration in order to facilitate implementation of the Nyeri County Disaster Management Act, 2021.2. Pauline Nyokabi (PWDs Representative) has sought a statement from the Committee on Gender, Social Services and Special Programmes Committee on the measures put in place to protect Nyeri residents from the effects of heavy rains. In her statement, Hon. Pauline noted that the excessive rainfall has resulted in drowning, collapse of houses, destruction of property and infrastructure, damage of crops and livestock loss, displacement of people, sanitation and public health risks and other socio-economic effects.The Hon. Member was concerned that the aforementioned are particularly grievous for Special groups such as PWDs, the elderly, residents occupying informal settlements and the residents living in the high-risk locations and therefore called for special attention.Hon. Jackson Kabingu yesterday engaged the Officers from the Department of Solid Waste Management led by the CEC Mr. Peter Ngatia and the Chief Officer Ms. Violet Koigi regarding the status of Gikeu dumpsite located in Othaya Sub County. Under discussion were the plans by the Department to drain the storm water runoff at the dumpsite to sewer systems as a long-term solution to prevent flooding of the site and pollution of the neighboring environs.
